Communications Writer

Position Overview

This is a position for an experienced writer who possesses excellent written communication skills in multiple styles including creative and business writing for a variety of audiences. This person will write original copy, repurpose, and edit content for print and online uses including bylined articles, messaging documents, speeches, video scripts, among other communications deliverables. This writer will act as a “journalist in residence” for the communications team to report on school events, speeches, and other noteworthy activities to produce articles for use with internal and external audiences. The person filling this role will have knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style guidelines, as well as extensive knowledge of grammar and punctuation, and knowledge of Finalsite is a plus. The ideal candidate will have a journalism or communications background, with a flair for storytelling. 

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an in-house writer and journalist in residence for the communications organization
  • Lead writing projects across a cross-functional team in support of email campaigns, magazine compilation, and announcements to the community
  • Advise communications team and broader constituents on concepts of the Chicago Manual of Style (as appropriate) and uses proper grammar and punctuation
  • Researches, identifies, and conceptualizes relevantstories.
  • Responsible for planning, researching, writing, andproducing.
  • Contributes photos, audio, video, graphic, and other multimedia content to complement writing for website, social media, digital signage, email, and other electronic and print publications and distribution.
  • Works efficiently and effectively, producing informative, engaging, timely, andrelevant content consistent with constituent and customer needs, ranging from reporting the daily/weekly life of the school in brief vignettes to special eventproductions.
  • Drives community and target constituent engagement through creation and presentationof digital content through multiple channels in a frequent, timely, and engagingmanner.
  • Other duties asassigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, creative writing, communications, journalism, public relations or related field 
  • At least 2 years of work experience in a relevant editing and writing field, includingportfolio of relevantwork.
  • Expert writing skills and experience with a variety of styles including creative, business, magazine, and writing for social platforms.
  • Excellent editing, grammar and punctuation abilities
  • Excellent communicator — listener, writer, and multimedia storyteller. Understanding of creative, storytelling, and production theory and techniques. Ability to be innovative,creative, and think inside and outside thebox.
  • Familiar with current and emerging technologies and applications; interest and capacityto stay abreast of newadvances.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience with relevant software and equipment, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and Final Cut Pro, and all media channels,including web, social media, print,etc.
  • Experience with photography and graphicspreferred.
  • Demonstrated project managementskills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multipleinitiatives.
  • Deadline-driven with ability to move quickly
  • Self-starter able to workindependently.
  • Strong team player and activeeffective collaborator. 
  • Interest in and understanding of education broadly and independent school, college,and nonprofit environments specificallypreferred.
